Chimney stucco, with the cap and flashing that keep it dry
A chimney gets hit by weather from every side and from above, so it fails before the walls do. We stucco brick chimneys to match a newly finished house, repair chimneys where the stucco has cracked or blistered, and sort out the caps and flashings that are usually the real cause of the problem.
Owners finishing a house in stucco, and owners whose chimney stucco is cracking, staining or falling off. What you get
A chimney finished to match the house, with a proper cap, drip edges and roof flashing so water stays out. Where
Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Oakville and the rest of the GTA. 4.933 Google reviews
What a chimney job includes
The stucco is the finish. The cap and the flashing are what make it last.
- Inspect the masonry
Loose brick, failed mortar and a cracked crown are repaired first. Stucco over a moving chimney cracks with it.
- Cap and crown
A proper cap or crown that overhangs the stucco with a drip edge, so water falls clear instead of running down the face.
- Roof flashing
Step and counter flashing checked and corrected where the chimney meets the roof. This is where most chimney leaks start.
- The system
Insulation board or a direct-applied base coat on the brick, mesh wrapped around every corner, and the finish matched to the house.
- Sealing
Joints at the cap, the flashing and any penetrations sealed with a compatible sealant.
How a chimney shows trouble
Vertical cracks and dark staining near the top mean water is getting in at the crown or cap.
Water behind the finish, usually from above.
Base coat that has lost its bond to the brick, often after freeze-thaw cycles on a wet chimney.
Often the roof flashing, not the stucco. We check both.
The hardest-working square feet on the house
A wall gets rain from one side and is sheltered by the eaves. A chimney gets it from four sides and from above, sits in the wind, and goes through more freeze-thaw cycles than anything else on the house. Any weakness in the crown, the cap or the flashing lets water into the masonry, and in winter that water expands and pushes the stucco off.
That is why we treat the top of the chimney as the job and the stucco as the finish. A crown that overhangs with a drip edge, counter flashing let into the masonry, and sealant at every joint turn a chimney that fails every few years into one that lasts as long as the walls.
What moves the number on a chimney
Every job is quoted after we see the wall. These are the things that move the number.
- Height and roof access
Steep roofs and tall chimneys need scaffold or roof staging.
- Masonry repair
Repointing or rebuilding the top courses before the finish goes on.
- Cap or crown
Repair, or a new precast or metal cap.
- Flashing
Resealing existing flashing, or new step and counter flashing with the roofer.
- Finish
Matching the house finish, or stone on the chimney.

What our customers say
Chimney stucco questions
Can you stucco a brick chimney to match the house?
Yes. The chimney is finished with the same system and the same finish coat, and the cap is detailed so water does not run down the new face.
Why does chimney stucco fail faster than the walls?
Water from above. A chimney with a flat crown or no drip edge keeps its face wet, and freeze-thaw does the rest.
Do you fix the roof flashing too?
We inspect and reseal it, and we work with your roofer when new flashing is needed.
Can the chimney be done in stone instead?
Yes. Manufactured stone on a chimney is common on houses with a stone base.
Is the work insured and warrantied?
Yes. Stucco & Co carries $5 million liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and every job comes with a one-year warranty on our work.
