Colours and finishes: choosing a stucco you will still like in ten years
The finish coat is what you see every day, so we spend time on it. We carry several textures and a full colour range, we bring samples to the site visit so you can hold them against the house in daylight, and we tell you plainly which choices age well and which cause trouble on a sun-facing wall.
Anyone choosing a finish for a new exterior, a resurfacing or a recoat. What you get
Samples in hand, honest advice on texture and colour, and a finish applied evenly by a crew that does it every day. Where
Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Oakville and the rest of the GTA. 4.933 Google reviews
The finishes we apply most
Every finish is an acrylic coat trowelled on in colour. The aggregate size and the hand set the texture.
- Fine sand
The modern standard: a smooth, even surface with a fine grain that hides small imperfections. Most of our recent houses are fine sand.
- Medium sand
A little more texture, forgiving on large walls and older substrates.
- Swirl and freestyle
The aggregate is worked in a pattern by the trowel. A classic look, less common now.
- Smooth
A near-flat finish for a crisp modern elevation. It shows the quality of the base coat, which is why not every crew offers it.
- Specialty finishes
Limestone and precast looks, metallic and high-impact finishes for commercial frontages. Priced on request.
How to pick a colour you will keep
A chip indoors lies. We bring sample boards to the visit and hold them against the house, in sun and in shade.
Dark finishes on sun-facing walls run hotter and show dust and efflorescence more. They can be done, and we will tell you what to expect.
Roof, windows, stone and the neighbours. A finish that works with what cannot change is one you will not regret.
A body colour and a trim or moulding colour is almost always enough. The best houses in our gallery use two.
Why we trowel a new finish instead of painting
Owners sometimes ask if they can paint their EIFS a new colour themselves. We advise against it. Finish coats are manufactured very differently from the paint sold at a local supplier, and paint on a textured acrylic finish peels, traps moisture and ruins the surface for the next coat.
When you want a new colour we trowel on a new finish coat in the colour you have chosen. It bonds to the system, keeps the texture and lasts as long as the original. See recoating and colour change.
What moves the number on a finish
Every job is quoted after we see the wall. These are the things that move the number.
- Texture
Standard sand finishes are the same price. Smooth and specialty finishes cost more because of the preparation.
- Colour
Most colours are standard. Some deep and bright tints cost more per pail.
- Number of colours
Each colour change is a cut line and a change of material.
- Primer
Some colours and substrates need a tinted primer first.
- Samples
Sample boards are part of the visit, not an extra.

What our customers say
Colours and finishes questions
Can you match an existing colour?
Usually, from a chip or a piece of the old finish. Weathered colours are matched to the wall as it is now, not as it was.
Can you match a paint company's colour?
Most paint colours can be tinted into the finish. Bring the name or chip.
Does the colour fade?
All exterior colours shift a little over the years. Acrylic finishes hold colour well because the pigment is through the coat, not on the surface.
Can I see a house in the colour I like?
Often. Tell us the colour and we will point you to a finished house in the gallery or nearby.
Is the work insured and warrantied?
Yes. Stucco & Co carries $5 million liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and every job comes with a one-year warranty on our work.
