Recoating and colour change: a new colour, trowelled on, not painted
When a stucco house is sound but the colour is dated or faded, a new finish coat gives it a new face for a fraction of the cost of a new exterior. We do not paint EIFS. We trowel on a new acrylic finish in the colour and texture you choose, after the repairs and resealing that every older wall needs.
Owners of sound stucco or EIFS who want a new colour, a refreshed finish or a modern texture. What you get
Small repairs and resealing done first, then a full new finish coat across the elevation, in the colour you chose. Where
Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan, Oakville and the rest of the GTA. 4.933 Google reviews
What a recoat includes
A finish coat is only as good as what it goes onto. The preparation is most of the job.
- Inspect and repair
Hairline cracks filled, small blisters repaired, loose areas fixed. A recoat does not hide a wet wall.
- Reseal the joints
Windows, doors and transitions recaulked. Old sealant under new finish is a leak waiting to happen.
- Clean
The wall washed to remove dirt, chalk and biological growth so the new coat bonds.
- Prime
A tinted primer where the colour change or the substrate calls for it.
- New finish coat
Trowelled on across the whole elevation in the new colour and texture, cut cleanly at corners and trim.
When a recoat is enough, and when it is not
No blisters, few cracks, base coat firm. A recoat is the right job.
A recoat keeps the texture underneath. To go from heavy to smooth, see resurfacing, which adds a new base coat.
If cracks are everywhere, a recoat will show them again within a year. Resurfacing with mesh is the fix.
If someone painted the wall, the paint has to come off or be properly primed before a finish will bond. We check at the visit.
What happens when EIFS is painted
Finish coats are manufactured very differently from the paint at a local supplier. Paint on an acrylic texture forms a skin that peels, holds moisture against the finish and makes the next proper coat harder to apply. We see painted EIFS often, and it always costs more to put right than a recoat would have.
A new finish coat, trowelled on, bonds to the system, keeps the texture crisp and carries the colour through the coat. It lasts as long as the original finish did.
What moves the number on a recoat
Every job is quoted after we see the wall. These are the things that move the number.
- Area and access
Measured at the visit, scaffold or lift noted.
- Repairs and sealing first
The number of cracks, blisters and joints to deal with.
- Colour change
A big shift in colour may need primer and sometimes two passes.
- Texture
Standard sand finishes are standard price; smooth costs more.
- Details
Mouldings and bands recoated in a second colour.

What our customers say
Recoating and colour change questions
How long does a recoat take on a house?
Usually a week or less, including repairs and sealing, depending on size and access.
Can you recoat only one side of the house?
Yes. Colour is matched to the sides not being done, or the whole house is done for a clean change.
Can I go lighter or darker?
Either. Going much darker on a sun-facing wall is discussed at the visit, since dark finishes run hotter.
Does a recoat fix cracks?
Hairline cracks are filled first and do not show through. Widespread cracking needs resurfacing with mesh.
Is the work insured and warrantied?
Yes. Stucco & Co carries $5 million liability insurance and WSIB coverage, and every job comes with a one-year warranty on our work.
